PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE WORKING PAPERS EXHIBIT

Working Papers: Donald Judd Drawings 1963-93
, opened Friday, January 13th at Sprueth Magers Gallery presenting 33 drawings by the American born artist. The exhibition was curated by Peter Ballantine, who since 1969 has specialized in almost all aspects of Judd’s work. The drawings were executed during Judd’s artistic career when he began working on three-dimensional objects. Throughout this entire period of time the artist began working on three dimensional work. With regards the earliest drawings, Judd is still working out (or rejecting) which sculptural ideas he would make himself. The largest drawings in the show are illustrations of Judd’s works that were created after they were completed, a kind of guarded-but-quietly-charged ‘portraiture’.

Judd, who is described as a key artist of the post war Minimalist movement had an interest in forms and the space that those forms occupied. Like other Minimalist artists he rejected the illusionism of painting and was drawn to the literalness of sculpture. The exhibition of Judd’s drawings allows the rare opportunity to see the artist’s signature that was usually omitted from his works to maintain his symbolic expression.

Peter Ballantine will give a talk about the issues of Judd’s drawings and fabrication at the Courtauld Institute of Art’s Kenneth Clark lecture theatre on February 17th at 7pm.
