VALERIAN HUGHES – PARIS F/W 2011 PRESENTATION
Venus, star of the night, the couture collection from Valerian Hughes for Fall/Winter 2011, is a bit scattered. There are interesting elements, such as the sculptural black tulle that climbs up a black silk dress, or an organza/satin/silk concoction with an oversized fur collar.
However the mixture of too many contrasting materials, too many contrasting styles and references all in one place was perhaps detrimental to the strength of the collection as a whole. Exaggerated obi’s and python skin bustiers were some repeated elements. A mermaid style dress bespeckled with Swarovski crystals resembled prom attire more than a luxury item. The python is modern and edgy, and then the very next look, a wedding dress, is delicate and soft. He’s hot or he’s cold.
While the inimate atmosphere of the presentation in Hughes’ atelier on the Champs Elysées was agreeable, the collection itself was a bit disappointing. Hughes has talent, to be sure. Now, the next step is to see how he will channel this into more focused works.
